Justice-involved populations

including individuals who are currently incarcerated, awaiting trial, or re-entering society after prison or jail face a complex, compounding web of systemic barriers. These obstacles significantly affect their ability to rebuild their lives, secure stable livelihoods, and successfully reintegrate into their communities.

The Problems:
The Stigma of a Criminal Record:
  • Background checks heavily penalize applicants. Many employers automatically screen out or reject candidates with a felony or misdemeanor record, regardless of their qualifications or rehabilitation.
Occupational Licensing Restrictions:
  • Thousands of state and federal regulations legally bar individuals with criminal records from working in specific industries (such as healthcare, cosmetology, real estate, and trades), locking them out of roughly 25% of the economy.
Employment Gaps & Skills Deficits:
  • Extended time away from the workforce can cause technical and soft skills to atrophy, making it difficult to compete in a changing job market.

The Solutions:
Free primary and secondary education for all:

The government will ensure free books, learning materials, and no school fees for every child.

Smart classrooms and digital learning:

Every school will have computer labs, internet access, and options for online classes to bring education into the modern era.

  • Digital learning tools (smartboards, computers, projectors)
  • High-speed internet for online learning
  • AI-driven educational platforms to personalize learning experiences
Skill-based and job-oriented education:

Not everyone wants to be a doctor or an engineer, my child.
We will introduce graphic design, programming, freelancing, and technical training programs so that young people can build careers on their own.

Easy student loans and scholarships:

Talented but underprivileged students will get low-interest education loans, ensuring that no one has to drop out due to financial struggles.

These obstacles significantly affect their ability to rebuild their lives, secure stable livelihoods, and successfully reintegrate into their communities.

In 2024, more than 9,200 ex-prisoners left jail only to become homeless!

The Problems:
Exclusionary Housing Policies:
  • Private landlords frequently use criminal history screens to deny housing applications.
Public Housing Restrictions:
  • Federal, state, and local public housing authorities often have strict statutory lookback periods or blanket bans that disqualify individuals with certain drug-related or violent convictions from receiving housing assistance.
Unstable Living Conditions:
  • Without stable, safe, and affordable housing, returning citizens face a drastically higher risk of recidivism and homelessness.

The Problems:
Continuity of Care:
  • Navigating the transition from institutionalized care to community healthcare is notoriously difficult. Many face disruptions in prescription management for chronic physical conditions.
Mental Health and Substance Use:
  • Incarcerated populations experience disproportionately high rates of substance use disorders and mental health challenges. Upon release, a lack of immediate, affordable, or continuous access to treatment often leads to relapse and increased mortality rates.
Medicaid and Insurance Gaps:
  • Suspended or terminated Medicaid benefits during incarceration can take weeks or months to reinstate post-release, creating critical windows of time without health coverage.

The Problems:
Voting Restrictions:

  • Depending on the jurisdiction, individuals with felony convictions may lose their right to vote—either temporarily during supervision or permanently—diminishing their civic voice.
Collateral Consequences:
  • A criminal record can bar individuals from receiving public assistance (such as SNAP food benefits), student loans for higher education, or serving on a jury.
Social Stigma and Family Fracturing:
  • The emotional and psychological toll of incarceration strains family dynamics, often fracturing support networks that are vital for successful reintegration.
